Project Details

The Deal Middle School expansion at 3815 Fort Dr NW, Washington, DC, is an $18.5 million design-build project led by MOYA Design Partners, in collaboration with Ashley McGraw Architects and Chiaramonte Construction. Scheduled for completion in 2024, the 22,500-square-foot expansion will enhance the school’s facilities while preserving its historic character, nearly 120 years old.

The project includes 12 modern classrooms, two advanced science labs, an expanded dining area, and additional administrative spaces. Designed to complement the existing architecture, the new structures seamlessly blend with the school’s historic aesthetic.

A key feature is the upgraded central courtyard, intended to serve as a hub for community engagement, collaboration, and outdoor learning. Targeting LEED Gold certification, the design incorporates sustainable features like bioswales.

MOYA has worked closely with DC Public Schools (DCPS) and the Department of General Services (DGS) to ensure the project meets community needs and enriches the educational experience in DC’s Ward 3.

Project Details

The Old Randle Early Childhood Education Center, located at 1650 30th St SE in Washington, DC, showcases an impressive blend of historic preservation and modern educational design. Completed in 2022, this $14 million project, led by MOYA Design Partners in collaboration with Hord Coplan Macht and Keystone Construction, revitalized a 1911 Elizabethan Tudor-style building, one of the oldest school structures east of the Anacostia River.

Spanning 20,865 square feet, the center serves students from Pre-K3 to 5th grade, including infants and toddlers. The design retains the building’s historic character while accommodating contemporary educational needs, featuring six classrooms, discovery spaces, and administrative offices.

Despite challenges in balancing historical preservation with modern safety standards, the team, with approvals from the Historic Preservation Board, sensitively restored original elements. The center also boasts sustainable features, achieving LEED Gold certification, with green roofs and Energy Star Certification. This project exemplifies MOYA Design Partners’ expertise in creating nurturing, sustainable environments for early childhood education.

Project Details

Located at 655 15th Street NW in Washington, DC, the Office of the People’s Counsel (OPC) encompasses 21,000 square feet of thoughtfully designed office space. Completed in 2023 for Boston Properties, the project aimed to create a modern, inviting environment for staff and visitors.

Moya Design Partners led the architectural and interior design, emphasizing connectivity, innovation, and adaptability. The central reception area exudes warmth and hospitality, complemented by conference rooms, lounges, and collaborative spaces that encourage communication and teamwork. Custom environmental graphics inspired by Washington, DC’s streets and houses symbolize OPC’s strong connection to the local community.

Sustainability was a key focus, incorporating high air quality, energy-efficient lighting, and durable materials. The design features open workspaces and transparent private offices to promote collaboration, while small event spaces foster interaction and diverse thinking.

Honored as a Silver Winner in the 2023 MUSE Design Awards for Interior Design-Office, the OPC office space meets current needs while preparing for future growth.

The Takoma Metro project at 327 Cedar St NW, Washington, DC, is a transformative mixed-use development led by EYA with Moya Design Partners as Architect of Record. The project secured Historic Preservation Review Board (HPRB) recommendation and regulatory approvals on a historically expedited timeline, a rare achievement that reflects the strength of the design’s contextual sensitivity and team collaboration.

Upon completion, Takoma Metro will deliver 435 residential units — 364 market-rate and 70 affordable, representing 16% of the total — 17,650 square feet of ground-floor neighborhood-serving retail, and over an acre of programmed open space. Designed with wood-over-podium construction and a Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) delivery method, the project is targeting LEED Gold certification with features like solar-ready roofs, green roofs, bioretention facilities, and enhanced tree canopies. It replaces a large surface parking lot with structured parking, further improving environmental performance.

The development responds carefully to its surroundings: lower building heights along residential edges, vibrant retail and plaza spaces along Cedar Street, and dynamic façades along the rail corridor. With amenities including a gym, pet spa, library/business center, and pool, Takoma Metro is poised to transform the area, seamlessly integrating housing, retail, and community spaces to strengthen connections between Takoma DC and Takoma Maryland.

Project Details

Our design proposal for the interiors of the Jamaican Houses of Parliament capitalizes on the ever-present breezes, tree groves, and sloping landscapes of Kingston by emphasizing sun, shade, shelter, and permeability, as well as celebrating the colors and shape of the Jamaican flag: gold for the sun, the green of the land, and black for the strength of the Jamaican people. When viewed in plan, the bold, black “X” formed by the lobby’s grand staircases combines with natural sunlight and a green ‘living wall’ to embody a vision of the flag in the interior architecture. Indoor trees are essential to the concept; woven throughout tile or travertine floors, they welcome Jamaica’s unmatchable landscapes indoors. The free form of the reception desk is wood-crafted; it emphasizes the main color palette while also supporting public engagement. Behind the desk, a mosaic tile installation showcases the pride of Jamaican art.

Fifty-five years of independence, but no national house: Gordon House, the former administrative center of a colonial power, has served as Jamaica’s parliament since independence. Gordon House is an office building, not a national assembly, but soon a new Jamaican Parliament will rise to meet the people’s aspirations and set a vision for Jamaica’s future. It will be open and transparent—a place to gather and celebrate as much as to debate and deliberate. It will embody and enable diversity of origin, thought, and expression; it will be a symbol of Jamaica’s optimism and ambition: a new flag for a new millennium.

In December 2023, HR&A Advisors, a firm dedicated to creating dynamic, resilient, and equitable communities, opened their newly renovated Washington, DC office at 1700 K Street Northwest, situated in the heart of Ward 2. This location, spreading over 3,233 SF, resonates with the firm’s philosophy of shaping vibrant, resilient, and inclusive communities. The renovation, costing approximately half a million, followed a Design-Bid-Build method, focusing on tenant-specific modifications. 

Reflecting HR&A’s innovative spirit, the office now features a contemporary reception, a warm waiting area, and adaptable huddle rooms, encouraging collaborative and imaginative interactions. The heart of the design is an open “living room” flexible work zone featuring comfortable soft seating alongside an open work area, endorsing a dynamic work culture. A high-tech conference room, catering to both physical and virtual meetings, is pivotal, considering modern work requirements. The layout also includes private phone booths, blending collaborative and individual work needs. 

Additional features comprise a well-appointed pantry, restrooms, and vital support and storage spaces. This renovation is more than just a physical upgrade; it symbolizes HR&A’s commitment to evolving workplace dynamics and their dedication to creating spaces that are not just functional but also conducive to the well-being and productivity of their team.

A recent transformation included a 17,000-square-foot modernization and a 33,000-square-foot expansion, earning the 2017 ENR MidAtlantic Best Project award. Led by Paola Moya at Marshall Moya Design, the project created fluid indoor-outdoor learning spaces, featuring green areas, a rooftop farm with photovoltaic cells, and versatile spaces like an art room, science gallery, and library that connect to outdoor gardens and play areas.

Focused on sustainability, the LEED Gold-certified building supports activities like language enrichment and nature clubs. This collaborative effort with DGS, DCPS, CFA, HPO, and Skanska showcases the school’s commitment to sustainability and sets a new standard for educational design.
