Moya Design Partners developed the conceptual design for a new, integrated training campus serving Washington, DC’s Fire and Emergency Medical Services (FEMS) and Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). This high-performance facility was envisioned as a national model for first responder training—combining operational excellence, resilience, and wellness in a state-of-the-art environment.

Our concept focused on creating a dynamic, flexible, and secure campus that meets the critical training needs of both departments while fostering collaboration, readiness, and long-term efficiency. The design includes administrative and academic spaces, tactical simulation areas, indoor/outdoor physical training zones, and specialized facilities like a driver training track, firing range, and burn tower.

The architecture prioritizes clarity and efficiency, with buildings organized into a walkable core and secure perimeter. We emphasized durable materials, intuitive circulation, daylighting, and sustainable infrastructure to reduce operational costs and environmental impact over the life of the facility. Key strategies included biophilic integration, smart building systems, and resilience against future climate-related disruptions.

This concept was guided by three core goals: to support high-performance training, to strengthen inter-agency coordination, and to create an inspiring campus where DC’s first responders are prepared to meet evolving public safety challenges. With forward-thinking infrastructure, integrated indoor and outdoor environments, and design centered on human performance, this proposal reflects Moya Design Partners’ commitment to shaping spaces that serve mission-critical needs with innovation and integrity.

Moya Design Partners, in collaboration with Gilbane, developed the concept design for the STEAM Engine @ Inwood—an inclusive, future-ready learning hub designed to serve the Inwood community in Upper Manhattan. This visionary facility integrates STEAM education with cultural identity, workforce development, and environmental sustainability.

Drawing inspiration from Inwood’s Dominican and Latin American heritage, along with its natural setting near Inwood Hill Park and the Harlem River, the design uses natural wood, biophilic elements, and bold environmental graphics to create a vibrant and welcoming environment. The program includes flexible classrooms, a media lab, maker and fabrication spaces, and a dedicated zone for artificial intelligence learning, robotics, and digital production.

Spaces are designed for accessibility, collaboration, and hands-on exploration—supporting everything from youth workshops to community events, culinary training, and workforce programming. Modular furniture, glass partitions, and warm material palettes encourage both engagement and focus. This adaptable layout supports evolving community needs over time.

The STEAM Engine @ Inwood is envisioned as a local resource that blends innovation, education, and culture—creating a powerful platform for learning and opportunity in the heart of the neighborhood.

Project Details

The Douglass School project in Leesburg, VA, represents a significant architectural achievement, blending historic preservation with modern interior design. Originally established in 1941 by the local African American community as the county’s only high school for Black students until 1968, this project, completed in 2023, pays homage to the resilience and determination of the community.

Led by MOYA, with Beyer Blinder Belle as the Architect of Record, the interior design firm meticulously preserved the school’s original layout, materials, and iconic auditorium, while integrating modern amenities to meet contemporary standards. This 70,000 SF project, with a construction cost of $27 million, utilized a Design Bid Build delivery method, ensuring that both the historical and functional aspects of the building were honored.

The rehabilitation of Douglass School involved close collaboration with architects, engineers, and consultants to transform the building into a multifunctional space. Today, it houses departments of Loudoun County Public Schools, Parks, Recreation, and Community Services, as well as offices for the Edwin Washington Society, the Loudoun Douglass Alumni Association, and the local NAACP chapter.

Recognized in both the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places, this project highlights our expertise and its partners in combining architectural design services with a deep respect for historical integrity. The revitalized Douglass School now stands as a symbol of enduring heritage and modern architectural excellence, continuing to inspire future generations.

About the Project

MOYA served as Architect of Record, leading architecture, visual design, and community engagement for the revitalization of Eastern Market Metro Park in Historic Capitol Hill, Washington, DC.

The project was shaped through extensive collaboration with community organizations and residents, including the Eastern Market Metro Park Advisory Team (EMMPAT), Barracks Row Main Street, ANC 6B, and surrounding neighborhoods. To ensure inclusive community participation, MOYA facilitated public meetings, workshops, and an online survey that gathered input from 429 residents and non-residents, as well as interactive tools like virtual whiteboards and online polls.

MOYA’s team worked closely with the community to refine design options based on feedback, ensuring the final park reflects Capitol Hill’s values and needs. The design features sustainable landscaping, flexible public spaces, and curated public art installations that honor the neighborhood’s cultural identity. Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team of engineers, MOYA delivered a fully integrated design solution that brings lasting value to this important civic space.

About the Project

Wonders Early Learning & Extended Day engaged MOYA Creative team to rebrand their existing website with one that integrates smoother navigation, new information features, and one that incorporates their playful brand. We cut and edited a short full-screen video as a header in their homepage with Wonders’ mission as the theme. Our team worked on making complex resources easy to access. Application forms, downloads for parents, and different options to give donations are usable from all platforms.

Calls to action and interactive elements guide the user throughout, especially in pages that are dense in content. Wonders’ broad and vivid brand palette lent itself to unique color combinations. The round black fonts, logo and pictograms asked for extensive use of white space along with bold organizational color blocks to let the brand’s vivacity breathe.

About the Project

The ZERO TO THREE Policy Center is a nonpartisan, research-based resource for policymakers and advocates on the unique developmental needs of infants and toddlers. ZERO TO THREE offers the HealthySteps program, an interdisciplinary pediatric primary care program that promotes the health, well-being and school readiness of babies and toddlers, with an emphasis on families living in low-income communities. The HealthySteps program has demonstrated positive outcomes for their participants; this includes the higher likelihood of receiving timely vaccines and screenings for childrenAmong parents who participate in the program, they are more likely to use positive parenting strategies and offer age-appropriate nutrition to their children.

The Creative team created a new, updated, more colorful brand that highlights theHealthySteps program’s important work. The team created infographics and visualizationsthat make it easy to read and understand the data and statistics from the important research HealthySteps conducted. These evidence-based one-pagers cover various topics, including the opioid crisis, child abuse, school readiness, provider burnout, and strategies for small/rural pediatric practices.

About the Project

Zero to Three Policy Center is an independent, nonpartisan, research-based resource for policymakers and advocates on infants and toddlers’ developmental needs. Their annual conference is a leading event for professionals and researchers in the field, and an opportunity to promote inclusive policies that improve children’s health and well-being.

For their upcoming 2021 Annual Conference, Zero to Three wanted to underline the importance of caring, sharing and communication. MOYA Creative team created a logo that represents just that: two caring hands coming together into the shape of a heart. The hands represent an embrace and combine a reimagined color palette of blue, green and oranges that is playful and evocative in equal measure. Creating brand recognition, the team added other related symbols that complemented the design.
