Urban Plan for Internally Displaced People (IDP) – Housing Solutions Proposal

This urban plan is a housing intervention for Internally Displaced People (IDPs). IDPs are refugees that remain in their country of origin. Colombia ranks second in the world for IDPs with nearly five million people displaced. IDPs present social, economic, and environmental challenges. Our proposal offers one solution: a sustainable housing model for mixed-income and IDP families.

This design addresses both the hardships of IDPs and their unique history in Cartagena. Five mixed-use housing towers provide a means for social integration. Vertical and horizontal farming can sustain as many as one-quarter of IDP residents. To further enhance self-sufficiency, we provided space for rooftop wind farms. An organic market promotes public gathering. The Gabriel Garcia Marquez Cultural Center, a venue for theater and dance, would embrace Cartagena culture. In addition, a museum would showcase the works of famed Colombian writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Further amenities include a daycare center, a public school, a healthcare center, and business center offering legal and financial help to IDPs.
