University of the District of Columbia’s New Student Center
Our joint effort with CannonDesign for the University of the District Columbia Student Center received multiple building awards: Design Excellence in the Unbuilt Category and a Professional Design Excellence Award from the National Organization of Minority Architects; an ENR Mid-Atlantic Award of Merit in Higher Education; and most recently a 2018 Best in Class Brick in Architecture Award from the Brick Industry Association. The Student Center was also a finalist in the Urban Land Institute’s Real Estate Trends Awards. Our goals for the $63 million building were to improve the urban landscape while integrating sustainability measures to achieve LEED Platinum status.
The UDC Student Center is the gateway to campus on Connecticut Avenue. It welcomes students and visitors alike with a new public square and clock tower. The fresh design is a hub for students and the public. It offers mixed-use amenities such as a welcome center, ballroom, student council offices, and activity spaces for students to relax and socialize. On-site restaurants cater to the diverse needs of residential students and commuters, undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty, staff, and the public. The University of the District of Columbia Student Center is one of only two student centers on the east coast to achieve LEED Platinum certification. With this modern and sustainable public face, UDC has branded itself as a 21st-century institution.
