The Walkway Interactive Exhibit

The Walkway was a street installation designed to engage passersby and spark a conversation about their experiences as pedestrians — including memorable interactions and related emotions. The District of Columbia Commission on the Arts and Humanities commissioned the installation in partnership with the District Department of Transportation and Age-Friendly D.C.

Shaped into a tunnel and illuminated with purple interior lights, the installation was designed to attract attention, inviting pedestrians to engage and interact. The design team used individual large-scale portraits, artfully connected, to create one large image on the interior wall; it symbolizes the interconnections between strangers and the need for each person to feel secure. The exhibit’s custom graphics concluded with a call to action for a safer street environment.
