Horace Mann Elementary School
At Horace Mann Elementary School, our team’s 17,000 sq. ft. update and 33,000 sq. ft. addition received a National Architecture Award from the National Organization of Minority Architects and was honored as the 2017 ENR Mid-Atlantic Best Project K-12. The historic school, which covers an entire city block in northwest Washington, D.C., features fully renovated architecture and interiors to support the Reggio Emilia teaching philosophy. The firm worked closely with DGS, the National Capital Planning Commission, Commission of Fine Arts, the Historic Preservation Office, and the school’s SIT committee members to achieve LEED Gold certification.
Horace Mann Elementary School’s indoor and outdoor classrooms create a flexible and dynamic learning environment. The science gallery, art room, and multi-purpose rooms are adaptable and accessible; each opens onto outdoor gardens and instructional spaces. A rooftop pavilion with photovoltaic cells provides both open-air learning and viable urban gardening. To promote self-sufficiency, the vegetables grown here supplement cooking ingredients for the school’s cafeteria. This high-functioning and environmentally friendly LEED-certified school contributes to the well-being of both staff and students. Horace Mann Elementary School is a signature project for all involved.
