Project Details
Moya Design Partners, in collaboration with Gilbane, developed the concept design for the STEAM Engine @ Inwood—an inclusive, future-ready learning hub designed to serve the Inwood community in Upper Manhattan. This visionary facility integrates STEAM education with cultural identity, workforce development, and environmental sustainability.
Drawing inspiration from Inwood’s Dominican and Latin American heritage, along with its natural setting near Inwood Hill Park and the Harlem River, the design uses natural wood, biophilic elements, and bold environmental graphics to create a vibrant and welcoming environment. The program includes flexible classrooms, a media lab, maker and fabrication spaces, and a dedicated zone for artificial intelligence learning, robotics, and digital production.
Spaces are designed for accessibility, collaboration, and hands-on exploration—supporting everything from youth workshops to community events, culinary training, and workforce programming. Modular furniture, glass partitions, and warm material palettes encourage both engagement and focus. This adaptable layout supports evolving community needs over time.
The STEAM Engine @ Inwood is envisioned as a local resource that blends innovation, education, and culture—creating a powerful platform for learning and opportunity in the heart of the neighborhood.
